The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) was set up by the General Assembly in 1959 to govern the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity. The committee has two subsidiary bodies: The Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and the Legal Committee.

The Scientific and Technical Subcommittee discusses the scientific aspects of Space Exploration and strives to identify spin-offs resulting as a part of space-technology development and nurtures them to enhance the socio-economic development.

The Legal Subcommittee concentrates its focus on the formulation of legal mechanisms for the maximum usage of space exploration and space resources in a peaceful manner. It also ensures that any of the space related activities carried out by any nation do not violate the Outer Space Treaty.
